Middle Schoolers Design Simple Machines!

The 8th grade Honors Physical Science students have been busy this week designing and constructing a series of simple machines.

Their project aims to have their machine provide an overall function related to the movement of an object.

“This project focuses on creativity, effort, neatness, design, construction, and application of scientific knowledge,” said science teacher Tom Warburton, “it also focuses on student-driven learning of the unit content”.

Students assembled into teams, working together to accomplish the interactive assignment allowing for creativity as well as peer interaction.

When asked what they learned through this project that they didn’t know before, the students had a lot to say.

“We have learned how pulleys work,” said Julia Herd. While Harris Wilson said, “We learned that an inclined plane can act as a slide.”

They also learned that as a team, they can create a simple machine that works when their knowledge is put together. “Our machine", said Ethan Gawryluk, “is built so that the marble will go into the hole, drop down, follow the scope, hit dominos, and then pop a balloon with a screw!”

Students not only learned new terms and applications through this project, they were also able to put their newfound knowledge into action.

PCA Student Selected To All State Choir!

Congratulations to Senior Olivia Martin who was selected this year for the prestigious 2021 South Carolina All State Choir. Hundreds of talented students from across the state auditioned for a spot in the All State Choir. The audition included learning and performing the vocally challenging song, “Honor and Glory”, by Johann Sebastian Bach. Normally, students do a live audition in front of a panel of judges, but this year, due to COVID, students were able to submit a recorded audition. “I am so proud of Olivia”, says PCA Choir director, Kathy Thames. “This is one of the most competitive choirs in our state which means that Olivia is one of the top singers in our state. She worked very hard for this honor.”

The All State weekend had been scheduled for May 2021, but unfortunately the event was cancelled due to statewide COVID concerns.

In addition to singing classical music, Olivia continues to use her vocal talents to sing in the PCA High School Choir and to serve as our Impact Worship musical director. Olivia also sings on the East Cooper Baptist Church worship team. We are so thankful to see how Olivia uses her gifts to honor the Lord and bless others.
