4th Graders Explore Barrier Island

The smell of salt air and the sound of waves was all part of the experience as our 4th grade classes enjoyed a naturalist guided tour to Capers Island Heritage Preserve last Friday. Departing from the Isle of Palms marina, the budding scientists explored the winding salt marsh tidal creeks and the Intracoastal waterway before arriving at their destination.

Along the way, students learned about the fascinating ecosystem and the plants and animals that call it home. Crab traps were pulled onboard the boat and the marine life captured the students' attention as they brought it in for closer examination. They learned how stone crabs and puffer fish are created with special abilities to protect themselves when in danger.

Once on the island, students were able to ask questions about items found on the beach. They saw and learned about horseshoe crabs, jellyfish, pelicans, and a variety of plant life living in and around the salt marsh.

4th Grade Teacher, Connie Meadows, says this field trip enhanced all that students are learning about the salt life ecosystem inside the classroom. "This trip allowed the students to see, touch, and experience things that would otherwise just be seen on a video or read about in a textbook. It also allows for a good follow-up lesson as we will discuss and apply what was learned in the classroom with what we learned on our field trip."

Middle School SGA Focused On Greater Purpose

Students are encouraged to exhibit leadership qualities in their earliest years at PCA. Now our middle school is providing an opportunity to further develop those leadership skills through participation in the Middle School Student Government Association. Congratulations to our newly elected officers:

President: Tabitha Hewitt

Vice President: Jessi Mathis

Secretary/Treasurer: Elle Hinson

8th Grade Representatives: Maggie Anderson & Laura Horne

7th Grade Representatives: Henry Bodie & Norah Lowry

6th Grade Representatives: Millie Ralph & Andrew Pinkel

Middle School SGA Advisor, Rachel Tisdale, is excited about the year ahead and is ready to support this crew of eager 6th-8th graders.

“I wanted to bring back the Middle School SGA because it helps share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school leaders. We want to foster a positive environment in the Upper School where students learn and grow, and middle school is a great place to start. We are providing opportunities for students to be Godly leaders and allow them to serve their community inside and outside of PCA.”

The students' goals follow the same line of thinking. “I want to bring love and fellowship,” said President Tabitha Hewitt, “while creating Christ-like leaders in Middle School.”

Her classmate and Vice President Jessi Mathis agrees. “I hope we can all have the best Middle School experience while honoring God with our actions.”
