The Nativity Scene Celebrated With Lowcountry Oyster Shells

It’s Christmas time at PCA and that means decorations everywhere you look, countless trees both in the halls and in the classrooms, but most importantly, a focus on the birth of our dear Savior.

This year Mrs. Light’s third grade classroom helped celebrate the season by way of a special project.

Sally Myers, parent of Ford Myers, had the idea of walking the class through a unique art project of creating the Nativity Scene using oyster shells.

“I love the connection between the oysters and the lowcountry,” explained Myers. “The Nativity scene is my favorite part of Christmas.”

Students took gold paint and painted the outer rims of the oysters and then took a navy blue painted canvas and used brushstrokes of gold to create the hay in the manger as well as the star of Bethlehem.

“This project is fun,” said Anna Sims Avinger. “You get to do a project about Jesus and you get to do it for your parents!”

These creations are sure to be a sparkling light in this holiday season.

The Worship Center was a buzz with festive tunes as the PCA Band performed their annual Christmas Concert. The set started off with “A Festive Fanfare” followed by “At the Feast of Stephen”, “Jingle Bells,” and ”Holiday Bells are Ringing.” Then the students showcased their talents in solos and small ensembles which included pieces such as,“Let the Holidays Begin!”, “Chanson de Noel”, “Fanfare on Ode to Joy”, “African Bell Carol” and “Christmas Spectacular”.

“The band students did a fantastic job at the concert,” said Doll. “I was so proud of the students and their performance. I was especially proud of our 6th grade band on their very first (and hopefully of many) concert. I hope we got folks in the Christmas spirit.”

Clarinetist, 6th grader Lydia Cooper was excited for her first concert. “I was excited and nervous at the same time but I had a lot of fun!” Trumpeter, Ellison Wylie agreed and added, “My favorite song to play was ‘Ode to Joy’.”
