Scott Flansberg: The Human Calculator
2+2?
4+5?
134+156+186?
It doesn’t matter what number combination a person throws at Scott Flansburg, aka the “Human Calculator”, he is able to compute it using only mental math. Named by the late Regis Philman, Flansburg is in the Guinness Book of World Records, and has a TV show titled, “The Human Calculator” on the History Channel International.
This past Thursday PCA was fortunate enough to have Flansberg come and speak with the fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students, where he not only showed off his skills but also taught the students a new way to look at and compute what's known as complex math sentences.
Flansburg started off with some math exercises before explaining this computing process and even bringing up some volunteers to put their newfound skills to work. The audience of both students and staff alike were amazed at this new way of mathematical thinking.
