Hope For The Future In American Politics
It started off as a simple question, "Who watched the debate last night and what did you think?" From there, the students in Dr. Weaver's Senior American Government class took off in a conversation that Dr. Weaver said, "has given me hope that young people are thinking...and not just going with the [popular choices]. They did a great job analyzing the debates, and they were able to discern what each candidate said about their party's position." Senior Gabe Moser agreed, "It showed how the younger generation is engaged in politics."
The studying of political parties and the presidential campaign is not a new concept for Dr. Weaver's students as they recently started working on the "Presidential Campaign Project," a semester-long activity that involves the student's researching various aspects of the election including coverage of each political platform, a third-party platform of their choice, 15 articles covering multiple angles of the campaigns, and ending the project by reporting the state-by-state results and analyzing how they think the outcome will affect the country.
When asked what she thought about the project, Senior Emma Matthews, said, "the project helps us understand who we are voting for and what the candidates stand for. You see all the parties' platforms and how they fall in line with scripture."
Moser also feels that the project has helped him and his classmates as they are "not getting opinions from anywhere else, you form your own thoughts."
With election day right around the corner, we know that our seniors who are old enough to vote will be armed with the information and research to make an informed decision.
